Poll finds pity for Brown after press attacks

Gordon Brown, Britain’s prime minister, received a rare boost from an opinion poll on Wednesday – but only after the public took pity over “inappropriate attacks” against him by the press.

The expression of public sympathy followed a tumultuous week for Mr Brown, in which he was accused of mis-spelling the name of a dead soldier in a hand­written letter to his grieving mother.
