MPs on Wednesday counted the cost of a new stringent regime for parliamentary expenses that will hit their annual household incomes by an average of £17,000, according to analysis by the Financial Times.

Under proposals unveiled by Sir Christopher Kelly, MPs will no longer be able to employ family members, buy second homes with taxpayers’ money, claim for commuting costs or simultaneously hold a seat in the devolved regions.
