US carmakers accelerate bail-out drive

The US motor industry has ratcheted up its lobbying for a taxpayer-funded bail-out, linking a rescue to the US’s national security.

The intensified campaign comes amid increasing doubts that Congress will approve an aid package before the end of the year, in spite of warnings that General Motors and Chrysler are rapidly running out of cash.
