Owning the leading daily newspaper in a region governed by the same president for almost 30 years is not without its challenges.

“If we weren’t sometimes critical, what would we write about?” asks Michael Blandy, chairman of Blandy Group, which owns Madeira’s Diário de Notícias newspaper.
