Nick Clegg presided over a recent Liberal Democrat shadow cabinet meeting that one participant compared with “a village fête in the pouring rain where everyone fixes smiles like the sun is shining”.

The awkwardness was over reports that the Lib Dem leader loudly – and all too candidly – discussed a reshuffle on a packed plane. Mr Clegg breezed through the meeting as if nothing had happened. No one called his bluff.
