An impasse between pilots at Delta Air Lines and Northwest Airlines threatens to derail the companies' bid to merge.

The pilots had reached an agreement with Delta and Northwest on a new $2bn labour contract, a pivotal step toward the airlines' push to secure the unions' support for the merger.
