Poor earnings spell turbulence for bourses

European shares had another turbulent week as poor earnings and disappointment over the US economic rescue package meant that few investors were tempted back into equities.

The week began with thin volumes as many opted to sit on their hands ahead of US Treasury secretary Tim Geithner’s speech outlining the Obama administration’s plan to stabilise the US banking system and economy.
