Ancient towns in Amazon forest

The dense and apparently pristine forests of the western Amazon basin conceal extensive archaeological evidence of ancient urban settlements.

Anthropologists from Brazil and the US report today in the journal Science that the Amazonian settlements, now obscured by tropical forest, were once large and complex enough to be considered "urban", as the term is commonly applied to ancient Greek and medieval European communities.
