Disunity on Iraq could hit Democrat poll hopes

The worsening situation in Iraq has highlighted an uncomfortable fact for Democrats: they have failed to hammer out a unified strategy for what the US should do next.

The inability to stake out a common vision for Iraq reflects many factors, including the difficulties on the ground, a fear of being painted as weak on defence, and a fascination with the debate over whether US troops should be in Iraq in the first place.
