Tokyo to ignore local rebuff on US relocation plan

Junichiro Koizumi, prime minister, said his government would not change US military realignment plans in Japan in spite of the fact that 89 per cent of voters in one of the affected areas rejected the proposal in a plebiscite.

The overwhelming rejection of plans to expand the use of the Iwakuni base in Yamaguchi prefecture, western Japan, comes as a huge public relations blow to the Japanese government.
