White House in final push on ANWR

The US administration has launched a final drive to win approval for oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Reserve, hoping to end a decades-long debate that has pitted the benefits of increased domestic oil production against potential environmental damage to the pristine Arctic plains.

In an interview with the Financial Times on Wednesday, Gale Norton, interior secretary, said drilling in ANWR would have a minimal environmental impact but would provide a huge boost to domestic oil supplies.
