The UK Independenceparty spent more on advertising than the three main political parties combined to secure their strong showing in this summer's European elections, figures released yesterday revealed.
The fringe eurosceptic party was the surprise success of the June contest, beating the Liberal Democrats into third place and triggering a Conservative shadow cabinet reshuffle. But campaign spending data published by the Electoral Commission yesterday showed the UKIP's anti- European Union message was heavily bankrolled.
