Europe split on music copyright extension

Music performers’ and producers’ hopes of getting extended royalties in Europe in the near future have been dealt a blow because of the inability of European Union countries to agree on lengthening the copyright terms for music recordings.

Diplomats in Brussels said that a sufficient number of states had been opposed to legislative proposals which are currently in the pipeline to constitute a “blocking minority” – with the result that the issue was not put to a vote in ambassadorial meetings this week.
