Lyondell wins court approval of modified bankruptcy loan

A US bankruptcy judge late Friday approved with modifications a controversial $8bn loan that would enable bankrupt chemical company Lyondell Chemical to attempt to restructure in an effort to avoid liquidation.

“The debtors (Lyondell) without a doubt need the funding, without which they would quickly be liquidated,” Judge Robert Gerber told a packed courtroom in lower Manhattan after an intense hearing that lasted nearly three days.
