Concerns as ‘Pfandbrief’ market dries up

The turbulence surrounding German mortgage and government lender Hypo Real Estate is threatening to break down one of the last bastions of German bank refinancing, the ‘Pfandbrief’ market.

Bankers and analysts said the Hypo Real Estate crisis had a significantly negative impact on the market for the ultra-safe German covered bonds, which is the oldest and most stable corner of the broader covered bond market.
