Hostilities between rival train operators escalated yesterday after Brian Souter, chief executive of Stagecoach, launched a blistering attack on National Express in the wake of its decision to reject a merger between the two companies.

Mr Souter is understood to be furious that National Express has withdrawn from the discussions. He believes the board failed to take the proposal seriously and is hiding behind issues of competition and timing.
