Berlin spurns French criticism of ECB

German officials categorically rejected French criticisms of the European Central Bank yesterday, undermining Paris's attempts to forge a consensus around its calls for more political influence in monetary policy.

"As a rule, we try not to talk about the ECB, but our position is clear - its independence is sacrosanct to us," a senior Berlin official said yesterday, adding that he "could not imagine any circumstances under which we would support [the French] position".
