Banks have been urged by consumer groups to "throw in the towel", after losing an appeal over unauthorised overdraft charges.

In the latest instalment of what has become a longrunning saga, the Court of Appeal ruled that penalties levied against customers who exceed their overdraft limit can be assessed for fairness.
