Abbas offers bleak view of peace

Mahmoud Abbas, the president of the western-backed Palestinian Authority, on Wednesday cast further doubt on the possible resumption of peace talks after he renewed his call for an Israeli settlement freeze and accused the Jewish state of trying to derail the two-state solution.

But Mr Abbas declined to elaborate on his announcement last week that he would not seek re-election as president in a vote planned for January.
