Strong commodities and solid results bring respite

US stocks rallied strongly yesterday to put the benchmark S&P 500 index on course for its biggest monthly gain since 1974.

Strength in the cash-rich technology sector, meanwhile, meant the Nasdaq Composite index is now in positive territory for the year.
