Rise in Japan's jobless rate takes gloss off recovery data

Japan's seasonally adjusted jobless rate rose 0.2 percentage points in February against the previous month and household spending fell, taking the gloss off unsustainably strong data in January.

Yesterday's data showed that, although Japan's economy had been pulling out of last year's technical recession - when output shrank marginally in two successive quarters - it had still not reached comfortable cruising speed, economists said.
