BHP backs down in ore dispute with China

BHP Billiton, the world?s biggest diversified mining group, has settled with key iron ore customers in China and Japan for the same contract price rise as its two main rivals, backing off from its demand for an additional increase to reflect freight-related issues.

The settlement comes days before John Howard, the Australian prime minister, is due to travel to Beijing on a high-profile trip to seal an agreement to begin talks on a bilateral trade deal.
