Brown says farm virus is contained

The threat of foot-and-mouth disease appeared to recede on Friday as the prime minister and chief veterinary officer moved to calm fears that the outbreak had spread beyond its original containment area.

Gordon Brown said: “We have restricted the disease to a limited area of this country. The risk of it spreading out of these areas is low if not negligible.”
