Glenrothes trial for Brown and Salmond

Gordon Brown and Alex Salmond face the stiffest test of their political standing since the slide into recession, in the Glenrothes by-election on Thursday.

If Labour fails to hold the Fife seat that lies next door to the prime minister’s own, it will rekindle doubts about the durability of Mr Brown’s recovery following his handling of the financial crisis.
