EU wary on financial supervision

A far-reaching Italian proposal to set common standards for supervising financial institutions across the European Union was on Tuesday brushed aside in favour of a roadmap for more cautious step-by-step reform.

Finance ministers from the 27-nation bloc invited the European Commission, EU member states and national regulators to contribute ideas on how to strengthen supervision in time for an informal ministerial meeting next April.
