New foot-and-mouth virus leak revives fears

The discovery of a fresh breach of biosecurity at the laboratories at the heart of investigations into this summer’s foot-and-mouth outbreak revived concerns over the facility’s safety on Thursday.

Merial Animal Health discovered a leaking valve on Monday at its laboratories in Pirbright, Surrey, where live foot-and-mouth virus is handled in large quantities for the manufacture of vaccines.
