Free zones: Employment shrinks in the textile sector

The DR-Cafta trade agreement has not arrived a moment too soon for the beleaguered Dominican free zones.

Last year saw a disastrous collapse in employment in the nation’s export sector, with almost 40,000 jobs going from the nation’s industrial “free zones”, which account for 77 per cent of exports. That, equivalent to a drop of more than 20 per cent, came from three factors.
