Credit crisis hits Japanese car sales in US

Until recently, this year’s sharp downturn in developed-country automobile sales held a silver lining for Japanese manufacturers.

As high fuel prices forced drivers to abandon petrol-guzzling 4x4s – made predominantly by rival US groups – more fuel-efficient offerings from Toyota, Honda and other companies snapped up market share.
