England’s footballers will trigger a ritual outpouring of national elation and blind optimism on Wednesday if, as expected, they secure qualification for next year’s World Cup finals in South Africa by beating Croatia at Wembley.

The embattled pub industry will begin planning for a badly needed injection of business next summer, as will bookmakers, sports retailers and pizza delivery operators.
