At least two more building societies - Britannia and West Bromwich - could be set for mergers, but windfall payouts may be limited or even non-existent in the current financial crisis.

Britannia, the second-biggest society, has confirmed it is in exploratory talks about a possible merger with Co-operative Financial Services (CFS).
