Coaches: Transcending national styles of play

The last game at the old Wembley stadium was also the last of a certain idea of coaching. It was October 7 2000, England had just lost 0-1 to Germany, and England’s manager, Kevin Keegan, walked off the pitch to catcalls. His team could not pass. Keegan resigned.

England replaced him with their first foreign manager, the Swede Sven-Göran Eriksson – just as British companies were increasingly hiring foreign chief executives.
