A widening corruption scandal involving a suspected mastermind with the mafia nickname Don Vito on Wednesday threatened to cripple Spain’s opposition Popular party, with PP officials complaining that the party was losing the opportunity of the economic crisis to attack the governing Socialists.

Court documents made public on Tuesday unveiled an investigation into at least 64 people, including businessmen and PP politicians, suspected of links to a corrupt network that won more than €17m ($25m) of contracts from the party and regional governments it controlled in exchange for bribes and favours in the form of money and gifts such as cars or watches.
