Higher Chinese demand puts strain on oil prices

US oil prices pushed above $72 a barrel yesterday as traders returned from the long holiday weekend to be faced with further evidence of rising demand in China.

Nymex July West Texas Intermediate settled 66 cents higher at $72.03 a barrel while in London IPE Brent for July delivery rose46 cents to close at $71.05a barrel.
