Data ease fears over US economy

Hopes for the US economy were lifted on Friday by new data pointing to lower inflation expectations, stabilising new home sales and a stronger manufacturing sector.

The reports helped calm the US stock market after an ugly sell-off on Thursday spurred by renewed concerns about the health of the financial sector and the housing market. By the close in New York, the S&P 500 was up 0.4 per cent.
