Cuba: 50 years of Revolution, Magnum Print Room, London

“One of these days, I’m going to publish a book of all the pictures I did not take. It is going to be a huge hit.” He may well have missed the odd shot in his 75 years, but Swiss photographer Rene Burri has deftly captured countless others with a casual elegance of style. He is perhaps best known for his intimate portraits of Picasso and for his striking (and much reproduced) image of Che Guevara, shot in 1963. The portrait of a triumphant Guevara, erect cigar clamped between his teeth, appears as part of a new exhibition of work by Magnum photographers held to mark the 50th anniversary of the Cuban revolution.

Burri’s picture hangs in reverent solitude at the back of the gallery, as though Guevara himself were surveying the diverse works on the walls before him. At the entrance to the show, the poignant black and white photographs of the unfolding events of 1959, captured by Burt Glinn and Bob Henriques, are both thrilling documents of their time and a testament to the determination of the two photographers.
