A British academic is to help invest $100m (€76m, £51m) in schools in developing countries after an article about his work in the Financial Times attracted the attention of a leading Asian investment firm.

James Tooley, a professor of education at Newcastle University, will work as a special adviser to the fund set up by the charitable arm of the Singapore-based Orient Global to invest in low-cost private schools for the developing world's poorest children.
