Jon Symonds had a wide range of options when he lost the race to be chief executive of AstraZeneca two years ago.

With his strong reputation among investors and analysts, he was well placed to be chief executive of another company, to move into private equity, or to “go plural” with a series of well-paid non-executive directorships and other advisory jobs.
