Shops lying at mercy of number-crunchers

Land of Leather was not a typical credit crunch victim. It did not fall prey to a bloated balance sheet, imprudent expansion or inflexible debt covenants.

The sofa retailer, which called in administrators on Monday, was free of debt. It did not even have an overdraft. The company simply stopped being able to generate enough money from sales to pay its bills.
