Labour’s love affair with Britain’s biggest-selling newspaper ended in ­dramatic style on Wednesday after The Sun tried to disrupt Gordon Brown’s efforts to revive his party’s morale by switching its support to the Tories.

The paper’s declaration that “Labour’s lost it” triggered a furious reaction from ministers and brought a tetchy response from Mr Brown as he tried to build on a generally well-received speech on Tuesday.
