Abe fights to survive in wake of poll rout

Shinzo Abe, Japan’s prime minister, was fighting to save his job on Monday amid growing dissent within his party and escalating calls for his resignation from an emboldened opposition.

Mr Abe won approval from the ruling coalition to stay in office in spite of an electoral thrashing on Sunday in which his Liberal Democratic party lost its upper house majority to the opposition Democratic Party of Japan.
