Peruvian elite nervous over nationalist outsider

Experienced observers of Peruvian presidential races have a motto: “Watch the outsider”.

The last two elected presidents owed their victories to their outsider status. In 1990 Alberto Fujimori, an academic and political neophyte, became the first east Asian to be elected president in Latin America by presenting himself as an alternative to Mario Vargas Llosa, the novelist closely identified with the political establishment.
