Japan business confidence at record low

Confidence among big Japanese manufacturers has suffered a record fall to a record low, the Bank of Japan’s quarterly Tankan survey showed on Wednesday, but analysts seized on hints the much watched indicator could be close to bottoming out.

The latest illustration of the depths of economic distress in Japan came as an index of Chinese purchasing managers showed business conditions there deteriorating at a “marked rate” and South Korea and India reported sharp falls in exports.
