Southern Cross sees mortality rates rise

The cold winter increased mortality rates and widened losses at Southern Cross, the UK’s largest care home operator, as fee increases for residents failed to compensate for the group’s higher rental costs.

“The mortality in the December to middle of January period was very much larger than it was in the prior year,” said Jamie Buchan, chief executive of Southern Cross.
