It is a tough time to be a sophisticated, cosmopolitan multimillionaire. No one likes you, save for people whose friendship could be dishonourably tinged with self-interest, such as art dealers, croupiers and Mayfair estate agents.

Alistair Darling is among the haters. He set out on Tuesday to blast the tax privileges of private equity barons, with entrepreneurs among those suffering collateral damage.
