In spite of its lack of car chases, explosions and sex scenes, British film producers could not have scripted Gordon Brown's Budget speech better.
After much uncertainty and numerous changes to the film tax regime introduced in the 1997 budget, the Treasury and film industry appear to have settled on a final take. Brown declared that the tax relief model that had been abused by some financial intermediaries would next year be replaced by a tax credit going straight to film producers.
