Harley-Davidson, the Milwaukee-based motorcycle maker, will cut 1,100 jobs, or 12 per cent of its workforce, in response to weakening sales and mounting difficulties at its financing arm.

Harley shares slid by 9 per cent in early trading on Friday after the company announced a 58 per cent fall in fourth-quarter earnings to $77.8m.
