Stobart, whose green Eddie Stobart trucks have a fan club of “truck spotters”, could spawn a new generation of train spotters as it pushes for a further increase in the transfer of cargo from rail to road.

Andrew Tinkler, Stobart chief executive, is in talks with Network Rail to look for redundant land or lines in the rail system upon which it could build rail freight terminals.
