Malaysian rift widens as Mahathir quits

Mahathir Mohamad, Malaysia’s former prime minister, resigned on Monday from the ruling party he led for 22 years, raising the stakes in his public battle with Abdullah Badawi, the prime minister and party leader.

Dr Mahathir urged members of the United Malays National Organisation to quit the party until Mr Abdullah stood down. Only one member had acted on the call so far.
