Discounters rush to grab Woolies inheritance

When Hussein Lalani, co-founder of 99p Stores, the discount retailer, heard Woolworths had entered administration a year ago next week, he knew there wasn’t much time to lose.

“My brother and I jumped in the car and we basically spent three days just driving around London with a camera and a notebook,” he explains. “Taking pictures, making notes, looking at the shops – we were even peering through windows, which was tricky since there were lots of boards up.”
