Russia tries to soothe Georgia

Russia on Friday tried to ease tensions with neighbouring Georgia as international criticism mounted over its move this week to establish official ties with two separatist Georgian regions.

President Vladimir Putin ordered the Russian government to lift 18-month-old postal and visa restrictions on Georgia, and to hold talks on allowing banned Georgian goods, which include wine and mineral water, back on to the Russian ­market.
